The main types of gas weed eater have either a two stroke engine or a four stroke engine (also known as two cycle or four cycle).
This is weed eater has a four stroke engine, so as mentioned above, it starts like a dream even when cold.
The Remington RM2520 has been selling well these past few years and has built a reputation as a cheap, reliable weed eater that comes with a wide range of attachments like the blower, hedge trimmer and cultivator, making it a great weed eater for a variety of uses around the garden.
It’s another 25cc two stroke engine but is heavier than the Husqvarna above, weighing in at 15.75 pounds, so it is a bit on the heavier side compared to most 2 stroke weed eaters.
Generally if you are on a tight budget a two stroke weed eater will probably give more bang for your buck at lower prices.
It is comes with a 25cc two stroke engine that packs a punch and isn’t too difficult to start from cold thanks to its “QuickStart” technology, which is good for a two stroke as they aren’t the easiest to start.
The main things to consider when choosing a good gas weed eater are your budget, the size of your yard and how able bodied you are.
Prices vary greatly for gas weed eaters with cheap models around $100 and more expensive models around $500, so having a budget is important.
The Poulan Pro PP125 is another bestselling gas weed eater which also functions as a blower, hedge trimmer and edger with the attachments available for it.

That seems to be the most popular sentiment that other users agree set it apart from 4-stroke models of the same engine size and similarly priced 2-stroke trimmers.
That being said, advancing engine technologies as well as new lightweight shaft designs are enabling the 4-cycle trimmers to become a viable threat to take the throne as the most-popular weed whacker.
Taller users like the flex shaft on this particular Kawasaki unit but one thing it’s devout of is attachment capabilities, comparable to other units that offer blower, edger, or brush cutting capabilities in seconds.
Also like many other 4-cycle string trimmers on the market, the KTFR27A starts easy, usually on the first stroke.
One more convenience of this model is the tap head system that feeds trimmer line on the go instead of having to stop and place pre-cut pieces of string in the unit.
Because of this the power to weight ratio can really be cranked up and most people who own a 2-stroke string trimmer will claim they can cut through every weed in their path and small trees in some cases.
As with string trimmers and almost every other lawncare product, value is switching more towards convenience of use instead of power or torque.
Likewise other consumers prefer the on-the-fly trimming speed of the tap-head line feeding system while others find the pre-cut string pieces more durable and convenient.
Those same adults who browse big box and lawn equipment stores today will notice that there’s a new technology making waves in the industry, the advent and increasing popularity of 4-stroke string trimmers.
Most other customer reviews always go back to the power to weight ratio offered in the Kawasaki KTFR27A and how convenient it is for users of all statures.
Kawasaki has put their own name on a few of their products, specifically a popular array of string trimmers such as the KTFR27A.
There are a number of manufacturers either converting their whole product line over to 4-cycle trimmers or at least developing different types of hybrid models.
The designers aimed to bring all the positive benefits of most 4-cycle engine trimmers (low emissions, quiet, convenient) while eliminating the most negative aspect – the weight.
Their expanded product line also features chainsaws, snow throwers, leaf blowers, and of course hedge and string trimmers.
Some reviewers have complained that the model leaks fuel when it is stored upright and that they wish it held more line but those minor inconveniences can be offset by the lightweight design and 26cc cutting power.
From heavy brush to saplings and small trees, Honda’s brushcutter takes on the tough jobs with ease.
Heavy duty 4-stroke trimmer, ideal for commercial users or heavy brush.

As you can likely surmise … I like 2 cycle / stroke engines … Had a stacked 6 Mercury 90 2 stroke on a Bass boat a few years back that ran like a bat out of hades … Sounded like a bad mo…$$%%$$#% at idle too.
I’ve got a 2 stroke leaf blower, weed eater, small outboard, and chainsaw all 6 plus years old and have never fouled a single plug.
For example, after a 10-20 year swing to 4 stroke outboard boat motors, the outboard industry is moving back to 2 strokes as they seem to have the 2 stroke emission problem under control these days (at least in outboards).
Went out in my brother’s bass boat recently and his 2 stroke Evinrude 225 is quiet, smaller looking (compared to same HP 4 stroke outboards), doesn’t smoke, starts immediately and is incredibly powerful.
I thought that using a 4 Cycle would be a better performer, more power, more reliable, and a would be a good investment in doing lawn work.
Well, actually a 4-stroke is named such because the engine goes through 4 strokes in order to complete one complete cycle from fuel introduction to exhaustion.
Just like Lawn Mowers, the majority use Briggs and Stritton that are the work horses of the mower world and I have seen a low cost Craftsman last nearly 18 years with a Briggs and Stritton and then I see all the other mowers from $300-$700 with the same engine company, just a different name.
In fact, I can think of no over riding reason to use a four cycle engine in such an application.
So if it comes to weed eaters, I say 2 cycle and lawn mowers are good as long as they are powered by Briggs and Stitton.
Sure, for the most part they are throw away engines, but for the same reasons equivalent four cycle engines would be too.
A two cycle engine will typically have a lot more horsepower for the same weight than a four cycle one.
For my money you can’t beat a two cycle when the application requires high power in a small package that will operate at odd ball angles.
A 2-stroke engine completes it’s cycle in one revolution of the engine (piston goes up and down once).
It takes 2 revolutions of the engine (2 times the piston going up and down) to do this, and it sparks every revolution, regardless of the stroke, on most all 4-stroke engines, be it small engines or automotive engines.
On another note, four stokes have more power and torqe than a two stroke of equal size and weight.
I feel mislead in the purchase of the 4 cycle and in lawn equipment I have found that just because it cost more, does not mean it is better.
I just bought the 4 cycle straight shaft craftsman and it seems like it does not operate as good as the 2 cylces do.
The 4 Cycle is locked up to where the pully crank will not pull and I am going to have to try to find out if the cord is tangled or if what I was told, if it is not the cord, then it could be a costly fix.
I ride Dirt Bikes, and the manufactures have been R&D themselves to death to make 4 stroke engines competitive with 2 strokers and have accomplished that feat in the motorcross/supercross circuits.
The 4-stroke ones have same power as 2 stroke trimmer, they compensate by using bigger block.
After years of crappy electric trimmers that seem to last a year or two and dragging extension cords around to trim my lawn I said fuck it and bought a gas trimmer.
I was in Home Depot the other day casually browsing for a new weed trimmer and was surprised that 4 stroke models are offered.
I have a Honda 4 stroke trimmer, and it has been completely reliable, and cuts through anything.
Power has never been a problem, except with the hedge trimmer.
I’ve had a Ryobi 4 stroke with the interchangeable heads for about 10 years.
Been using a Troy Bilt 4 stroke since Summer of 2006, only had two issues with it.
It runs great, has plenty of power and it hasn’t had any issues in the 6 years I’ve owned it.
I just bought the Ryobi 4 stroke from Home Depot, the one with interchangeable "heads".
I’ve had a 4 stroke troy bilt for two years now, no issues at all.
However a 2 stroke will have more power than a 4 stroke due to more power strokes per revolution than a 4 stroke.
My thoughts have always been that the 4 stroke adds a lot of complexity to a relatively cheap device.
It was always 2 stroke when I was growing up… I admit, the convenience of the 4 stroke and not having to keep a gas can of pre-mixed is great, plus avoiding the stink of two stroke operation is making me consider this.
Does anyone make a good 4 stroke string trimmer? Home Depot doesn’t, at Lowes it seems the Troy Built are not too highly regaurded.
They all seem to use either Stihl or Echo, and I ended up getting a 2 stroke Stihl.
When I was looking for a good weed eater, I made sure I payed close attention to all of the trimmers, blowers, edgers, etc… being used by the crews working in yards and along the side of the roadway.
Both Stihl and Echo make 4 strokes, how they run…. I have no personal experience with the 4 strokes, but I my 2 stroke.
Update : Couldn’t wait and bit the bullet and ended up getting a Husqvarna 223L 2-cycle from Lowes.
I bought a "Cub Cadet" 4 stroke at "Tractor Supply" last year.
The fuel intake line on my 825r string trimmer deteriorated causing some of the small hose fragments to get stuck in the carb.
It looks somewhat like the breather tube assembly listed here, but it makes a 90 degree angle and is male on both ends going into the carburetor and the fuel return line.
The upper drive shaft and housing assembly contains the drive shaft from the clutch and has a coupling on the other end to accept the lower drive shaft and housing assembly.
My Ryobi has a black plastic and metal part that comes out of the top of the carburetor and attaches to the fuel return line.
My trimmer wasn’t running, and the fuel lines were bad so I replaced the fuel lines and fuel filter.
I was nervous after reading all the reviews.  Some loved it and others did not.  After looking at prices, I felt this was worth taking a chance on.  Ordered and shipped with no issues.  Everything was there with exception of the oil and funnel that comes with it when you buy it new.  Was not an issue.  Used my own funnel and oil.  Put fresh gas and took it outside to fire it up.  Primed, put it on start and pulled on the cord a few times.  It wouldn’t fire up.  So I depressed the throttle and then placed the choke back on start (hitting the throttle hits choke on run setting).  Pulled the cord and she fired right up.  Hit the throttle after 10 seconds and she ran like a champ.  I took it out and did the whole yard.  Ran fine and had no issues.  I have only used 2 cycle trimmers before this.  The 4 cycle is powerful and has a nice deep sound.  This is heavier than a 2 cycle so if you going to use it for an extended peroid of time, be aware of that.  This is also a straight shaft trimmer vs curved.  I am used to a curve shaft going clockwise.  It’s not a big deal, but there was a small learning curve to using this and not getting hit with all the clippings.  I waited to use it additional times before writting this review.  It continues to fire right up and run with no issues.
Arrived in short order.  Not much packing material (none) in box.  Definitely looks used.  Some of the warning labels on the shaft were messed up which I thought could have easily been remedied by the refurbisher (one was the name of the trimmer, that’s bad advertising imo).  Filled with 10w-30 as directed.  Filled with 89 octane fuel.  Followed the directions for starting and it started on the second pull.  Idled well.  Once I gave it some throttle I noticed how much more torque this has than the 8 year old Ryobi 2 stroke it replaced.  Wow!  It would likely not have any problem with a tiller attachment.  The only ding is that when I used it for about 5 minutes to edge (holding at an odd angle with string swinging vertically) it would not run as smoothly as when it did with the unit in the upright position (as if to use the string horizontally).  It never stopped running though.  Good buy and would recommend.
This trimmer was delivered about 4-5 days after I ordered it.  My wife was happy about that, because our yard needed trimming very bad.  When the box was delivered, it was fairly beat up and partially opened.  However, once I opened it, I found all parts and the trimmer in as close to perfect condition as a reconditioned trimmer could be.  Very hard to tell from a new one, especially after I used it once.  I put oil in it, then gas in it and it cranked right up, first try.  This trimmer is a little on the heavy side, and isn’t the most well balanced machine, but for the price, it’s a fantastic deal.
Remove the wire from the spark plug of the Craftsman trimmer by pulling off the boot.
Whether it’s a 4-cylinder automobile engine or a 4-cycle trimmer motor, one of the best things you can do for it is to change the oil regularly.
Old engine oil carries fine shards of metal created by the movement of the piston against the cylinder, and these can infiltrate the piston seal and cause a leak.

Even after two and a half days spent comparing six heavy-duty string trimmers at the edges of trails, barns, outbuildings and stone walls, no victor had emerged.

10 Best Off-Road Vehicles You Can Buy Vehicles have gone soft lately as SUVs and pickups have prioritized fuel economy and comfort over all-out off-road capability.
When a machine started to vibrate or its cutting effectiveness declined as I leaned into the thick grass and weeds beneath the bottom rail, I turned it off.
The Smart Start system has been designed to make the machine start up smoothly, and the air purge system removes air from the carburetor, thus giving you a clean start every time you power on the trimmer.
