7 elements of design

According to Alex White, author of The Elements of Graphic Design, to achieve visual unity is a main goal of graphic design.
Visual Design elements and principles describe fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design.
Planning a consistent and similar design is an important aspect of a designers work to make their focal point visible.
A good design contains elements that lead the reader through each element in order of its significance.
Principles applied to the elements of design that bring them together into one design.

Great lens! As a photographer, I also appreciate composition within design.
A very useful lens! Thanks for the information – plus I the images.
Colors effect peoples moods, I’ve got a lens about this featured below;), so use that to help create the mood of the composition you are looking for.
If you like to browse lens as I do, mine has a great educational topic with poll questions for my readers to enjoy.
Design is broken down into seven main basic ingredients: Line, Color, Shape, Texture, Form, Value & Space.
great educational lens, liked viewing and answering your poll questions.
Great lens! great job! Really wondering if the artwork you showcase in your lenses is yours.
this is a fantastic lens, full of great information and education.
Great Lens, I really enjoyed reading it and learnt so much from it.
Love your lens.
This is a wonderfully informative, engaging, well written and well illustrated lens (and your artwork is wonderful!).
Nice Work here with the lens, very informative and full of life.
Focal point (see lens below about focal point) is achieved in a couple ways that I will go over.
I used to draw all the time, and now that I see your lens, I get reminded to go back to it.
Great lens.
Another great lens.
As a pro artist myself I can appreciate all of the work you put into this lens.
Beautiful paintings! And very helpful and informative lens on the basics of art composition.
By the way, thanks so much for blessing my "Top 10 Most Favorite Divas in The Philippines" lens.
What are the most basic features of an artwork, they are expressed through line, color, shape, form, value, texture, and space.

The art elements are line, shape, form, tone, texture, pattern and colour.
Contrast can be used with the elements of design such as size, color, shape, texture, line, value and space.
For example, to create unity in a layout you can use any one of the elements such as line, texture, shape, space, size, color.
There are seven elements of graphic design that are the starting point of your design ideas: Line, Shape, Texture, Space, Size, Value and Color.
To balance an asymmetrical design, use design elements such as color, value, size, shape and texture.

In graphic design, size is used to convey importance, attract attention and create contrast.
Take one part color, a pinch of texture, and a whole lot of shape and the result will be some well designed graphic design.
Using texture in graphic design adds depth and visual interest.
A vital part of any good graphic design, Space is the area around the elements in a design.
Lines, in graphic design, can be used for a wide range of purposes: stressing a word or phrase, connecting content, creating patterns and more.
The Elements of Good Graphic Design are the components or parts of a work of art or design.
Relating the design elements to the the idea being expressed in a painting reinforces the principal of unity.eg. a painting with an active aggressive subject would work better with a dominant oblique direction, course, rough texture, angular lines etc.
If you don’t have any background in design at all, this video may be a good place to start your googling from, if you don’t happen to recognize a term or want to know more about it.
Good design isn’t the kind of thing that’s taught as a core class in most educational systems.
Principles of Design, as said before, are the laws of designing anything! When making a design the seven principles are contrast, emphasis, balance, unity, pattern, movement, and rhythm.
The seven elements of design are color, value, texture, shape, form, space, and line.
What exactly does "Principles and Elements of Design" mean? Principles of design are the laws of designing anything! In other words, to have a good design, you should consider these principles for the best design possible.
Unity means keeping your design in a sort of harmony in which all sections of the pattern make other sections feel complete.
Why would you wanna leave parts of the design blank? Sometimes a human’s eye needs space to feel confortable, and space will let the human’s eye distinguish the part that’s meant to be noticed compared to just the background.
For example, you could plan to have wavey lines all around your design as a pattern, but then you must continue those wavey lines throughout the design for good patterns.
Contrast means showing differences in two different sections of the design or showing somehow that the design being created is very different from other designs because of its contrast.
Elements of design on the other hand are things that are involved within making a design.
Emphasis is given to an area within the design because that area is meant to be seen or is more important to be noticed when compared to other places of the design.
Make sure your design identifies some sort of line so that the human eye can recognize which side is the top of the design or on which side the design is suppose to start with interest.
If you have lines or shapes that seem to be running horizontally, then the design would seem like it’s running in a left and right line.
Balance means keeping your design like a pattern.
Principles and Elements of Design is what this page will focus on.
Keeping your design symmetric is a good technique for good balance, but not necessarily the best for all types of designs.
Just make sure your design’s color is right for the mood! Also make sure that each section’s color matches another section’s color.
For example, circles going diagonally up and down from right to left could show that the design moves up and to the right or down and to the left.
For example, your design might be to have white parallel lines going up and down.
Just as said in the paragraph above, make sure the colors you put on your design are dark or light enough for the proper mood.
Elements of Design, as said before, are things that are involved within making a design.
Pattern is simply keeping your design in a certain format.
The term shape refers to any area of a real or imagined object which is defined and rendered by other elements such as line, texture, color, space or light.
The effects of light are vitally important to our understanding and appreciation of the three dimensional art forms of sculpture and architecture.
The contrast between dark and light not only describes space and defines forms in art, it also conveys feelings, drama and a psychological as well as an aesthetic dynamic.
This picture shows us four main colours which are Blue, Red, Green, and Orange.
Negative Shapes- A hand and red background is the only things other than the positive shape (bike wheel).
Sketch Lines- The picture Gives me the impression that it’s a galaxy from outer space.
The red and orange show warmth while the blue and green show relaxed cool breezes with the help of a blue sky background.
Dynamic Shape- Nothing feels moving or active because the whole picture looks frozen in time.
Contour Lines- The lines that describe the picture are the lines that are in groups to make it look like an information web.
Texture also refers to the way the picture is made to look rough or smooth.
Width- Thin/Uneven Length- Short/Broken Direction- All Angles Focus- Blurry Feeling- Jagged Outlines- The object is not made by any edge so there for it is silhouette.
Tip: Incorporate asymmetrical design by using larger visual elements in one area of the space, until the place you want the viewer to focus on is featured.
Tip: Study color theory, typography and the balance principles detailed above to ensure that all of the elements flow together to create a cohesive design.
Think of the overall elements of design as a way to edit down the visual pieces of your existing presentation in order to organize and make them more cohesive.
For example, if the elements on the page feel like they were placed without purpose, then your design will feel scattered, and your audience will likely be confused about the tone of your message.

Symmetrical Balance: With this type of balance the elements on both sides of the design are in similar location and size.
Creating a beautiful presentation requires a symphony of visual elements to work together for a “big picture.” Designers seek to make the entire vision work together in terms of how each part interacts.
The use of lines, colors, values, textures, forms and space to carry or direct the eye of the viewer from one part of the design or picture to other is called movement.
Color, Values, forms and Shapes, space lines, and textures are called the elements of design.
In visual art, balance is the arrangement of the elements of design in space; in music, it is the arrangement of the elements of design in time.
Major objects, shapes, or colors may dominate a picture by taking up more space or by being heavier in volume or by being darker in color than the subordinate objects, shapes and colors.
Proportion appears in many places in music; chords sound full when they are constructed using the template of the harmonic series; in other words, using larger intervals for lower pitches and smaller intervals for higher pitches.
There are many common elements in art and architecture, for example, form, shape, color, repetition, composition, pattern.
Balance is the arrangement of lines, colors, values, textures, forms, and space.
Just as the visual artist has a palette of colors to work with when creating a work of art, the musical composer’s palette consists of tone colors, also called timbres (TAM-bers).
According to the Cyber Oregon Online COOL School website, the elements of design serve as the language of art; they offer key words that help translate a work of art into components that you can evaluate, compare and discuss.
Unity is created by using harmonious similarity and repetition, continuance, proximity and alignment, and closure of design elements in different parts of the work so that the parts RELATE to each other and create a unified whole, that can be greater than the sum of the parts, rather than an ill-fitting and meaningless assortment of elements.

Typography uses one design trend across the website that helps lead readers to different parts of the website.
Uber’s website uses the trend of a large photo background as well as the design element of making it responsive.
The design isn’t intrusive, yet it helps website visitors keep track of where they are looking on a page.

As color expresses the whole spirit and life of a scheme; details are just as an important underpinning of interior design.
Color – Colors have a definite impact on the atmosphere that you want to create when doing interior design.
Another important element of interior design where it is necessary to take infinite pains is details.
Interior design is a creative practice that analyzes programmatic information, establishes a conceptual direction, refines the design direction, and produces graphic communication and construction documents.
“Interior design is the process of shaping the experience of interior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment.
When doing interior design it is necessary to think of the house as a totality; a series of spaces linked together by halls and stairways.
Not to be confused with interior decoration, interior design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, architecture, and product design in addition to traditional decoration.
If you don’t have a natural focal point in your space, such as a fireplace for example, you can create one by highlighting a particular piece of furniture, artwork, or by simply painting a contrasting color in one area.
An interior designer is a person who is considered a professional in the field of interior design or one who designs interiors as part of their job.
This is not to say that all interior design elements should be the same but they should work together and complement each other to strengthen the whole composition.
In interior design, rhythm is all about visual pattern repetition.
Note: While primitive features are the primary way to visually show contrast and similarity, we have other ways to show both — for example, the actual content that the elements carry.
Ultimately, the goal is to contrast similar layers: making the elements in one group look similar to each other, but different from another like group of elements.
How do you show contrast and similarity between elements? The answer lies in the primitive features of the elements.
How you balance the similarity and contrast of elements through their visual characteristics will determine much about what those elements communicate to the viewer.
Visual contrast shows that links are different from the rest of the text, while the visual similarity among links tells us, once we’ve discovered what one does, that all of the links are clickable.
Similarity and contrast, connection and separation, grouped and ungrouped are all ways to describe the varying sameness and difference between elements.
Learning about the elements and principles of design gives us the vocabulary and understanding to talk scenic design as effective, aesthetically pleasing, or visually arresting.
The Principles of Design are concepts that refer to the relationships of the elements of design to each other and to the total composition.
