funny poems

A funny joke or poem has the power to point out subtle ironies of life that I might get shot in the head for if I were to say them straight out.
At the same time a poem doesn’t need to convey a profound message in order to qualify.
The truth is that jokes are funny because they contain a grain of truth about life that would not be able to be shown through any other medium.
A short poem has the added benefit of getting the message of poem through to the reader in a succinct way.
The real criterion that defines a poem is whether I am writing something that could not be conveyed in prose.
The strict grammatical rules that define prose have no place for a real poem’s sentiment.

Among writers in English noted for nonsense verse are Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll, Ogden Nash, Mervyn Peake, Edward Gorey, Colin West, Roald Dahl, Dr.
It is whimsical and humorous in tone and tends to employ fanciful phrases and meaningless made-up words.[1] Nonsense verse is closely related to Amphigouri (Greek amphi- (q.v.) + gyros "circle," thus "circle on both sides," or from Gk.
More contemporary examples of nonsense verse are Vogon poetry, found in Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or the 1972 song ‘Prisencolinensinainciusol’ by Italian multi-talent Adriano Celentano .
Limericks are probably the best known form of nonsense verse, although they tend nowadays to be used for bawdy or straightforwardly humorous, rather than nonsensical, effect.
Nonsense verse is a form of light, often rhythmical verse, often for children, depicting peculiar characters in amusing and fantastical situations.
Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear both made good use of this type of nonsense in some of their verse.
Some nonsense verse simply presents contradictory or impossible scenarios in a matter-of-fact tone, like this example from Brian P.
Other nonsense verse makes use of nonsense words—words without a clear meaning or any meaning at all.
However, the significance of the color of their heads and hands is not apparent and the verse appears to be nonsense.
Among German nonsense writers, Christian Morgenstern and Ringelnatz are the most widely known, and are both still popular, while Robert Gernhardt is a contemporary example.
Russian nonsense poets include Daniil Kharms and Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy, particularly his work under the pseudonym Kozma Prutkov, and some French exponents are Charles Cros and Robert Desnos.

PoetryOriginal rhyming poetry written and spoken by Australian poet Graeme King – funny poems, funny limericks, spoken poems, silly poems, serious poems and romantic poems.

Another to cast a comic eye at family life is Geoffrey Lehmann, whose ‘Parenthood’ includes a parody of American poet Allen Ginsberg’s famous ‘Howl’ as part of a lament about the joys of being a father and having your restaurant meal go cold while each of your three children demands to be taken to the toilet.  In ‘Gifts’, Aboriginal poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal sends up the traditional male love poem which offers the woman grandiose presents; here the beloved rejects all of these in favour of  the much more practical gift of something to eat: ‘bring me tree-grubs’.
Comic squibs and puns featured in the early issues of Australia’s first newspaper, the Sydney Gazette (1803), and later poets such as Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson contributed much comic verse to magazines such as the Bulletin.
Early in the twentieth century, C J Dennis had a great success with his verse novel, Songs of a Sentimental Bloke (1915) that recounts the struggles of the Bloke to get his girlfriend Doreen to agree to marry him.  One of the funniest poems is ‘The Play’ in which the Bloke and Doreen attend a performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and the Bloke behaves in a totally inappropriate manner.
