Open-world, 3D action-adventure existed for years prior to the release of any similar game from the Scottish developer DMA Design.[36] Mercenary (1985) has been described as a major ancestor to the Grand Theft Auto series, because it featured an open world which the player could explore freely.[12] The Terminator, released in 1990, was a free-form, open-world game that set its action in a modern-day city that extended for miles, and included the ability to fire at civilians and steal cars.
DMA Design began pursuing open-world game design with the first Grand Theft Auto,[13] which allowed players to commandeer various automobiles and shoot various weapons within a mission-based structure.[40] Unlike later games in the series, and indeed many earlier influences, the first two GTA games were 2D.
Grand Theft Auto clone is a genre of open world or sandbox action-adventure video games, characterized by their likeness to the Grand Theft Auto series in either gameplay, or overall design.

The Mafia series features two games (Mafia and Mafia II), which are available on varying platforms with Mafia II being available on the latest generation and is the game that most people reading this will want to play.

Based off of the award winning original Mafia video game, Mafia 2 explores the world of early to mid 20th century organized crime within an open world environment.
While the game is set in an open world environment with vehicles and weapons like in GTA, it is much more story and character driven.
If you like the Mafia genre and open world games, Mafia 2 is definitely the best game out there right now.
From ridiculous zombie grunting character voice options, to animal mascot suits, or sexy cowgirl outfits, the Saints Row series is outrageously politically incorrect and – dare we say it – downright fun! You can pick the game up at Amazon for cheapest price at roughly $30 (with free shipping).

Like the product description states, Grand Theft Auto brings the thrills of the classic GTA gaming series to your Game Boy Advance….big time.
Grand Theft Auto Advance brings the thrills of the class GTA gaming series to your Game Boy Advance.
What the game does right is exactly what the console versions got right: huge, open-ended areas, almost compleate freedom, tons of cars, lots of weapons, and a huge ammount of game time (technically, the game never ends… as you can always just drive around, go on rampages, stel cars, and go on vigilante missions).
The game features over 20 vehicles, all of which handle a little differently, and large, expansive neighborhoods that streach on forever.Although through the transition to the small screen, GTA has lost some of it’s gritty feel, it manages to keep all the violence, drug abuse and some sexual themes here and there to make GTA Advance one of the very few GBA games that is rated "M".

Starting from a great characters, even more great graphics and good music! As for now, it’s most "realistic" Grand Theft Auto game on PC – the way people are hitted by car, how they are moving, how you fight etc.
GTA IV has endless replay capability, and you can keep on committing acts such prostitution, vehicular manslaughter, selling large quantities of drugs, assault and battery, extortion, possession of military-grade explosives, murder in the first degree, and (you guessed it) grand theft auto for hours on end.
Rockstar Games, the Rockstar Games R* logo, Grand Theft Auto, and the Grand Theft Auto logo are trademarks and/or registered trademarks of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.
But after a few plot twists you’ll find out it’s not as regular as you might think, and these plot twists and the fact that you have to make some decisions at some points of the game are, in my opinion, the best thing this franchise has introduced to any of its games.

At first, it feels like your regular Grand Theft Auto plot, guy comes from another city or country, gets picked up by family or friend, yadda yadda.

How many of us know people who play violent games extensively, yet wouldn’t hurt a fly in real life? How many of us are those people? The leap from blowing up a military convoy in GTA 5 to doing so in Iraq is massive, and again, this should not be spun into some “video games are driving children to join ISIS” narrative, though that’s unavoidable in our current media.
Obviously there are about a hundred factors listed over “loves GTA 5″ as to why someone would choose to join ISIS, but some believe that video games have the ability to desensitize young people to violence.
The video, which can be seen below, uses clips from Grand Theft Auto 5, either story mode or GTA Online, in order to demonstrate that they “do the things you do in games, in real life on the battlefield,” according to a loose translation of the introductory text.
Terrorist group ISIS has combined brutality with social media acumen to become one of the most feared and reviled organizations on earth in recent months, publicly releasing videos of beheadings of American and British hostages in addition to broadcasting other unspeakable acts of violence.
No matter how many violent games you play, I think it’s a very, very low percentage of players who actually become desensitized to real life violence in the process.

This is one of my favorite topics, (because I'm building one of these games myself).  The answer is not simple – it's basically a combination of many techniques that come together to produce the result specifically for your game.  Minecraft uses procedural generation, and therefore has an "infinite" landscape, while GTA is more hand made, but is still an "open world" game.
It's time for a bughunt! Typo spotted in the French translation of the game? Game stops loading after Xbox One's middle button is pressed and switched to profile 2? Someone is going to have to file bugs into a bug database so they don't ship a faulty game or spend unnecessary resources on delivering patches in the future.
Sure, writers and designers create many possible scenarios, variations and branches, but if the player does not feel like they are making their own way through the game world, it is not an open world game.
Since the game is going to be distributed worldwide there's going to have to be a team for translators, voice actors who speak in different languages, and localization personal.
If the engine does not provide all of the features your game requires – a 98% probability since it is written for the general case – you'll need to write some "native code" in the guts of the engine itself.

Like before, it was the game’s freeform structure, stunning set-pieces and engrossing storyline that effortlessly wound players into the slaughter, this time harnessing the processing power of the world’s most powerful consoles to make the sprawling cityscape more realistic than ever.

The only thing it shares with GTA is the fact that it’s a really great game, and one that any sports fan should play, in spite of the shock of it being made by the Grand Theft Auto people.
Calling Rockstar Games and Timbaland Present Beaterator a game is kind of a stretch, since it’s technically a program designed to let you make your own beats.
Still, while it might be nothing like Grand Theft Auto, it’s another game that reminds that Rockstar is more than just an open world crime game studio.
This was a game that showed us just good video games could look on the Xbox 360, and it’s just a simple table tennis simulator.
So while it can’t take credit for actually designing the game, it’s still a game made by the company that is nothing like GTA except for the fact that’s it an action game played in a third-person perspective.
I was actually astonished at first when I realized that this game was not a Japanese import! To think it’s from Rockstar was a total surprise.
It takes place in a dystopian future (a setting that wasn’t nearly as overused when the game first came out), and it’s quite fantastic.

But what if you’re one of those rare people who don’t care about the Grand Theft Auto games? Where can you turn to fulfill that maladjusted itch for digital money, fame, and the occasional murder spree while wearing a hot dog costume? Here, in no particular order, are seven alternative crime games that are available now.
And if you’re still reading this paragraph, you just might like Killer is Dead, the latest action game from Japanese developer Goichi Suda (aka Suda 51).
As the unnamed protagonist, you receive mysterious messages on your answering machine asking you to “visit” a certain address — “visit” being subtle slang for “slay anything that moves.” A variety of creepy animal masks both hide your identity and confer bonuses that alter your gameplay in subtle ways, with 35 different weapons adding in another layer of strategy as you complete your missions.
But if you’re the type of person who’s seen movies like Internal Affairs, Mad Detective, and Election more times than you’re comfortable admitting, you might enjoy getting lost in Sleeping Dogs’ neon alleyways.
Both are sandbox games that drop you into a modern metropolis full of toys, hand you a storyline to follow (if you actually care to), and then stand back and say, “Go nuts.” Except Saints Row takes the go nuts thing and turns it up to 11.

Amidst the turmoil, three very different criminals plot their own chances of survival and success: Franklin, a street hustler looking for real opportunities and serious money; Michael, a professional ex-con whose retirement is a lot less rosy than he hoped it would be; and Trevor, a violent maniac driven by the chance of a cheap high and the next big score.

Rockstar Games is a development division of video game publisher Take-Two Interactive.

N.O.W. put out an action alert urging its members to pressure Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive into removing GTA III from stores.[4][5] GTA: Vice City, the next installment in the series, was condemned by Miami’s Cuban and Haitian communities for featuring violence between Cuban and Haitian gangs.[6] In 2005, Senator Hillary Clinton urged Federal Trade Commission to launch a probe into GTA: San Andreas to find whether the game lets users access "graphic pornographic and violent content".[7] Mothers Against Drunk Driving also criticized GTA IV for allowing the player character to drive while drunk.[8] Jack Thompson, a lawyer and prominent critic of violence in video games, has been the leading activist against the creators of Grand Theft Auto.
In 2003, William and Joshua Buckner shot Aaron Hamel and Kimberly Bede and told police that Grand Theft Auto III had inspired their actions.[23] The families of the victims hired Jack Thompson, who then sued the developer, Rockstar Games, the publisher, Take Two Interactive, the distributor, Walmart, and the maker of the PlayStation console, Sony Computer Entertainment, in order to "send a message to video game makers."[23] The video game industry has the right to make and sell violent video games, and it defends that right because violent video games are profitable.
Following media outcry over the horror game Night Trap and fighting game Mortal Kombat, U.S. senator Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) sponsored senate hearings on violent video games in 1993.[2] Alarmed by the possibility of federal video-game regulations, the game industry founded the Entertainment Software Rating Board, and created a rating system for games based on the level of violence and nudity.[2] As of 2011, video games have achieved mainstream status in the United States, and in-game violence is more realistic and ubiquitous than ever.
Justice Scalia likened banning violent video games to banning gory fairy tales and violent Saturday morning cartoons.[16] Other articles on their website demonstrate how the first amendment dominates legislation related to Grand Theft Auto and violent video games.

Gameloft’s next iOS Gangstar outing, Gangstar: Miami Vindication (£4.99, iPhone; £4.99, iPad) is a less entertaining tale of a country boy who moves to the city to help his family.
Urban Crime (Free, Universal) is a ‘freemium’ game from Gameloft that you can begin to explore free of charge, but that requires In-App Purchases if you wish to access all the features.
Even if you’re a fan of the mighty Grand Theft Auto (GTA) franchise, you might be unaware that the original game’s creators, DMA Design, once developed a not dissimilar free-roaming game for Nintendo entitled Body Harvest, but the plot hung on an alien invasion rather than thug life.
Grand Theft Auto 3 (£2.99, Universal) was an influential and controversial game, but it remains thoroughly entertaining.
In Car Jack Streets (£1.99, iPhone) you play the part of Randall, whose gambling debts owed to a crime boss have to be paid off by stealing cars, bank heists and other crimes.
This is a cute and cartoony game with isometric visuals in which you simply visit various city locations committing crimes, garnering resources and building up your crime empire.
Unfortunately, the App Store isn’t yet blessed with the original GTA or its sequel, but it does have the stupendously good Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (£6.99, iPhone; £6.99 iPad).
The earliest is Gangstar: West Coast Hustle (£2.99, iPhone; £2.99, iPad), which is a fair approximation of a GTA game.
The first, is the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Order & Chaos Online (£4.99, Universal).
If all this criminality is causing you to lose faith in humanity, might we recommend a brief stint playing on the side of the law, in Gameloft’s 9mm (£4.99, Universal).
And finally… all this seediness, violence and generally uncouth behaviour has probably left a slightly bitter taste in your mouth, so why not clean the palette with a couple of sandbox games that deliver a similar style of gameplay, but in guilt-free fantasy settings.
We mention this only because GTA is such a hotchpotch of ideas and game styles that when considering what other games fans might like, the answer isn’t necessarily clear cut.
