So the fact that this book was about a father and his children going on a bear hunt struck up this memory of mine, and made me the book all the more.
I have a very vivid memory of sitting at the back of the classroom in preschool, trying to peek over the heads of my 20 some classmates to better see my teacher as she held up We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” and read it out loud enthusiastically.
Originally a song written in the early eighties, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is a lively tale that brings a mish mash of emotions to the table.
You don’t have to go on an actual bear hunt to make memories with your kid that you can laugh over, just read the book.
Naturally we pull over, and when we inquired what was going on we were told there was a mother grizzly bear and her cub across this huge rolling field we were in.

            And a fuzzy little tail.

I first heard the story when the Scottish folk singer Alison McMorland recorded a traditional song about a bear hunt and asked me to design the record cover.
‘I modelled them on my own children’ … a detail from one of Oxenbury’s illustrations for We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.
By coincidence, Michael Rosen and his editor knew the song, too, realised it would make a good children’s story and, without knowing about my record cover, asked if I’d do the illustrations.
What brilliant, clever Helen and the editors "got" and had created is that special thing that pictures books can do – which is to narrate different stories in print and in pictures.
Michael had said he envisioned it as a king and queen and jester setting off to hunt a bear, but I immediately saw it as a group of children.

I remember an echo skit called “Going on a Bear Hunt” The first few lines were: Going on a bear hunt I’m not scared, Got my _________ I’m prepared.
It is actually based on the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is a day of active learning designed for Foundation stage children that looks closely at the Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury story of the same name.
After an introduction where the children are drawn in to feeling part of a magical story place to learn about stories together they consider the equipment needed to go on a bear hunt.
The day finishes under our special story tree with each group sharing their journey and then all singing and signing ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

‘Older ladies may remember going on a lion hunt, with Brown Owl banging out the rhythm on her knees,’ Rosen says.
There is no getting over it, no getting under it: We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, the infectious, chant-along verse by Michael Rosen, with illustrations by Helen Oxenbury, is 25 years old this year.
At this point, as a writer, you have to surrender your words to the illustrator and the designer; a text writer doesn’t make a picture book.’ Lloyd contacted Helen Oxenbury, without whose illustrations, Rosen insists, the book would never have achieved its instant and enduring popularity.
At 10am on July 15 Rosen will attempt to break the record for the largest reading lesson in the world, inviting 1,000 schoolchildren to take part in a Bear Hunt-themed lesson that will be live-streamed via a dedicated website, jointhebearhunt.com. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).
‘The best picture books are the ones doing two slightly different things, when there is a relay between the words a child hears and the pictures that the child reads for him or herself,’ he explains.
‘Each page has its own mini story, a drama that only the child can see,’ Rosen says.
