horse poems

Plus I’m a huge fan of Franz Marc though I swear that one image under Horses and Men In Rain is of a horse peeing.
I horses, you’ve created a nice lens, very original.
Let us write of olden, golden days and hunters of the Holy Grail and men called "knights" riding horses in the rain, in the cold frozen rain for ladies they loved.
I love the poems about the horses and the horses are my biggest passion.
What a wonderful page about horses! I love the artwork that accompanies.

He is more courageous, more loving, more trusting, more powerful, than any other being in this world – and yet so gentle as to let me join him on his Journey.
And of course, while it is not poetry, his famous short story, "The Maltese Cat." He refers to one horse in it has having legs of iron, that it would not feel being struck by a polo mallet.
"Horses are just like people; there are smart ones, dumb ones, miserable ones, honest ones, simple ones, cheats, freaks, leaders and laggards.
Among all the sights of the docks, the noble truck-horses are not the least striking to a stranger.  They are large and powerful brutes, with such sleek and glossy coats, that they look as if brushed and put on by a valet every morning.  They march with a slow and stately step, lifting their ponderous hoofs like royal Siam elephants.  Thou shalt not lay stripes upon these Roman citizens; for their docility is such, they are guided without rein or lash; they go or come, halt or march on, at a whisper.  So grave, dignified, gentlemanly, and courteous did these fine truck-horses look – so full of calm intelligence and sagacity, that often I endeavored to get into conversation with them, as they stood in contemplative attitudes while their loads were preparing.  But all I could get from them was the mere recognition of a friendly neigh; though I would stake much upon it that, could I have spoken in their language, I would have derived from them a good deal of valuable information touching the docks, where they passed the whole of their dignified lives.  ~Herman Melville, Redburn.
There are unknown worlds of knowledge in brutes; and whenever you mark a horse, or a dog, with a peculiarly mild, calm, deep-seated eye, be sure he is an Aristotle or a Kant, tranquilly speculating upon the mysteries in man.  No philosophers so thoroughly comprehend us as dogs and horses.  They see through us at a glance.  And after all, what is a horse but a species of four-footed dumb man, in a leathern overall, who happens to live upon oats, and toils for his masters, half-requited or abused, like the biped hewers of wood and drawers of water?  But there is a touch of divinity even in brutes, and a special halo about a horse, that should forever exempt him from indignities.  As for those majestic, magisterial truck-horses of the docks, I would as soon think of striking a judge on the bench, as to lay violent hand upon their holy hides.  ~Herman Melville, Redburn.

One of the most famous Australian horse poems is Banjo Paterson’s ‘The Man from Snowy River’.  This deals with an exciting chase after a valuable horse that gets away from a station in the Snowy Mountains and joins a mob of wild horses, before finally being recaptured by a young man who is the only person brave enough to tackle the difficult terrain.  Paterson also wrote many funny horse poems such as ‘The Wargeilah Handicap’ that describes a joke played on a visiting Englishman by people from a outback township, and ‘Father Riley’s Horse’ where a horse previously owned by a bushranger manages to win a big race.

For over three generations, the Academy has connected millions of people to great poetry through programs such as National Poetry Month, the largest literary celebration in the world; Poets.org, the Academy’s popular website; American Poets, a biannual literary journal; and an annual series of poetry readings and special events.
Though better known as a novelist, Lawrence’s first-published works (in 1909) were poems, and his poetry, especially his evocations of the natural world, have since had a significant influence on many poets on both sides of the Atlantic.
He wandered into France and became the mighty Percheron, and into Arabia, where he developed into a lovely poem of a horse, and into Africa where he became the brilliant zebra, and into Scotland, where he bred selectively to form the massive Clydesdale.
If one induces the horse to assume that carriage which it would adopt of its own accord when displaying its beauty, then, one directs the horse to appear joyous and magnificent, proud and remarkable for having been ridden.
We know that when the horse negotiated the land bridge… he found on the other end an opportunity for varied development that is one of the bright aspects of animal history.
Some of the topics Ginsberg touches upon in the poem include: a group of soldiers riding the train some of them probably on their way to Vietnam and their mentality; a nostalgic feeling for his past and youth, ruminations on his own public persona, entertaining the thought of retiring to some solitary life; current events, headlines, conversations (overheard or imaginary) taking place on the train, and sights; both on and off the train.
A Western about cowboys and horses, and how Hollywood made Westerns about cowboys and horses, and what happens when the real thing and the fake collide.
The writing is gorgeous, the setting so beautifully realized, both time and place, the narrative voice unforgettable, and all the characters so real and compelling.
Kim and I wrote a poem to put out with the horses that keep getting stolen – check out the poem on the Pearl Bakery Horse page.
I also wrote a sort of story poem (A Tale of Two Ponies) that is on the NE Portland Horse Stories page.
Then I decided that people really didn’t want to stop and read a long poem, so I wrote some much shorter ones.
The first poem I found was left by someone next to a horse I put out near NW 11th and Everett.
Being a foster child on Forest and Betsy Shirleys’ ranch, Buck learned to "understand the needs of horses that have been treated poorly, and are scared or troubled.
"In all the years that I’ve been giving clinics, I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how their horses have been abused.
When it comes to a horse that truly has been abused, there are some things you need to understand.
It’s almost as if they feel that, having saved an abused horse, it’s all right for them to fail at their horse work because, in their own minds, at least, they’ve become Good Samaritans.
"I know they have influenced me in the way I deal with people, but horses have always meant a certain level of consistency in my life.
He teaches horse owners how to better understand and work with their horses, using gentle training methods based on trust and respect rather than force.
From a life filled with pain and tragedy, Buck says that horses saved his life, and now he devotes his life to giving back to the ones who saved him, the horses.
But what if you’re post-modern even in the minimal sense that such a theory was an inflationary bubble that blew up in the last century and that puns, allusions and spun idioms can be used to document middle-class life, enhancing it like sugar eggs’ elaborate confectionery adds to the eerie realism of the miniatures inside them? Or you might find crossword fun in figuring out obvious answers from clever clues, a bonus in storytelling like the physical beauty of movie stars in real-people roles.
The title of Horse Latitudes, Paul Muldoon’s tenth collection of poetry, refers to those areas thirty degrees north and south of the equator where sailing ships tend to be becalmed, where stasis (if not stagnation) is the order of the day.
Where my breath left tortuous statues in the iron light.
