You can post updates from the web in the update box, via text message, on your cell phone’s web browser using, or from any third party application.

Tumblr: When you’re creating a post on your Tumblr page, you’ll see an area at the bottom asking you to add “tags.” When you start to type a tag for your post, Tumblr will automatically add a hashtag to the front of it.
This all brings us back to the most important question: are hashtags here to stay? Seeing as how they’ve been integrated into most of the popular social media platforms, and social media has entered almost every facet of our lives, the answer is yes.
Users can leave comments with hashtags, which will then click through to a page with videos that contain that hashtag in their title.
Hashtags are a way for social media users to tag their posts with keywords, which in turn make them easier for social networks to organize and users to search — we all know that.
So whenever a user adds a hashtag to their post, it is immediately indexed by the social network and searchable by other users.
Using a hashtag in a social post is as simple as adding the ‘#’ sign before a single word or phrase without spaces or punctuation (numbers are okay).
Instead of creating your own hashtags, you have the opportunity to craft Tweets based around trending hashtags in hopes of gaining visibility from users searching that trend.
Hashtags create incentives for people to categorize their posts, which in turn makes it easier for users looking for posts on the same topic to find content.
A few weeks ago, the San Diego Comic-Con was going on, and the @LEGOBatmanGame is taking full advantage of this by using the trending #SDCC hashtag to promote their brand, which is completely relevant to this audience.
Once a keyword picks up enough momentum it becomes known as “trending.” Trending isn’t simply a matter of becoming the most popular hashtag on the networks.
Though it’s easy to quickly create and send out a post with a hashtag in it, there is some basic etiquette when it comes to using them.
Though they’ve become stigmatized in our culture, hashtags actually do play a vital role on social media when used within reason.
Also, hashtags aren’t searchable on Pinterest, so you’ll need to just search the keyword to find the content.
Once someone clicks on that hashtag, they’ll be brought to a page that aggregates all of the posts with the same hashtagged keyword in real-time.
Facebook: Clicking a hashtag on Facebook will bring you to a separate page with posts that are visible to you based on the various users’ privacy settings.
Twitter users would use that hashtag to tell Audi why they would want an R8 for the day, and the whoever submitted the best tweet won the opportunity.
It may be pretty surprising to hear, but the first use of a hashtag in social media can actually be traced back to one man.

So what’s the point if you’re not reading and retweeting the latest gossip from all your friends, colleagues and favorite celebs? Plus, Twitter gives you options of who to follow immediately after signing up so you need not go far.

Take a blog post you wrote, and write out five variations of tweet that’s 10 words or less.
Attach a really cool image in your blog post tweet.
Try to find an image that will intrigue your followers, and make them want to find out more by clicking through to your blog post.
Try this method of update for your next blog post tweet.
If someone mentions your blog content on Twitter, retweet their tweet.
But simply tweeting the title of your blog post with a link back to your site will not work.

Show your followers a little more about what your blog post is about.
They include the shortened link to the blog post after their fact.
Running a contest, sweepstakes or group offer on your blog is a brilliant way to drive traffic to your site.
Give your followers a taste of your blog post.
Mention people who’ve made good comments on your blog post, too.
If you don’t promote your blog, how will anyone know about your great content? Driving traffic to your blog is about as essential to your blogging success as your writing itself.
There a few methods to use hashtags when you are tweeting to drive traffic back to your blog.

ISIS showcases its recruiting success via Twitter and Facebook, where foreign recruits themselves become propaganda tools of the group’s digital war, according to Gabriel Weimann, a professor of communication at Haifa University, Israel, who has been tracking terrorists’ use of the Internet for nearly 15 years.
Even though al-Qaida paved the way for ISIS on the Internet, the group has quickly outpaced al-Qaida at exploiting social media to its fullest potential.
Al-Qaida certainly has a presence on social media, but the group still relies heavily on "older" platforms, like websites and forums, according to Weimann.
ISIS’s ready embrace of gruesome violence, especially against Muslims, has long been a bone of contention, and it even contributed to the breakup between al-Qaida and ISIS in February.
And their separate techniques not only reveal key divisions between the two terrorist groups, but also illustrate the depths of extremism that ISIS will plumb—and that al-Qaida won’t.
Social media’s public and instantaneous nature is ideal for reaching ISIS’s target audience—young, disillusioned Westerners who are ripe for radicalization—and it gives them a sense of community.

However, if I could tag [if only as a favourite] updates from my phone, or send a certain ‘group’ of friends messages specifically, we are looking at something more than glorified group texting.

In this article I’ll show you how to get access to Twitter Analytics and find the data you need to track your campaign success.

Share facts, insights and statistics in 140 characters or less. Try to keep your tweets to about 100 characters to leave room for links and hashtags and to increase the likelihood that somebody will retweet your content. Use your Twitter lists to curate relevant content. Set up keyword searches to track content by keywords.
10.  Wordsmith your profile with keywords for search and fun facts for people. Once you have decided why you are using Twitter, what your target audience is and gone through the initial setup, now you want to show up in search.

11.  Publish your Twitter ID in your other media. I post my Twitter ID (@KenKrogue) in my email signature, at the bottom of articles I write and anywhere else I think applicable. This lets people know I’m on Twitter and helps them find me.
When you are signing up, you will need to decide your Twitter name, which is how people will tag you in tweets and ultimately how you will be known on Twitter. Mine is my name, @KenKrogue. If you can’t get your own name, add your passion or function like @KenKrogueSells or something. My company address is @InsideSales.
The favorites-follower rule: I click ‘favorite’ on your Tweet, then you follow me. This method helps you gain targeting following by first finding Tweets that match your interests and targeted keywords.
Keep tweeting — Resend tweets with different angles. Some social media experts (Guy Kawasaki for example) recommend that you send the same tweet four times to cover all four U.S. time zones.
For example, if you are in sales, try searching #sales and related keywords you have identified using the Google Keyword Tool. If you want to see tweets surrounding a certain topic enter that term into the search bar, and it will bring you to all related tweets.
Alternate tweets by time of day and day of week. Social media scientist Dan Zarrella says that the best time to tweet if you want to be retweeted is on Friday at 4 p.m. EST.
This means that you are sharing somebody else’s Twitter content with your own followers. My tweeting guru friend @GabeVillamizar shares some great tips on retweeting.
Bridge Twitter with other media. Create a dynamic experience for your Twitter audience by including different types of media, such as images and videos.
To create a hashtag, place # before a word. Hashtags allow Twitter users to tap into a Twitter-wide conversation.

Setting Twitter aside for the moment, what does your business or organization need to do better? Some misguided business leaders think they need to be Twitter because "that’s where our customers are," and don’t see that Twitter is a tool that can help a business achieve its real goals.
Why is your business on Twitter? If the primary (or only) reason is to drive traffic to your website, you need to rethink your strategy.

On April 22, 2010, during the United Kingdom general election, 2010, several right-wing British newspapers including the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express, and The Sun reported several news stories regarding the leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg, including political donations made to his private bank account,[73] and making a Nazi slur.[74] This was seen by users on Twitter as a personal attack on Clegg on the day that the second Prime Ministerial television debate was to take place after he performed well in the first.
In 2009, higher education faculty began using Twitter to help establish social presence and just-in-time interaction with students who are not bound by a learning management system.[22] [23] An example of an educational Twitter account is @RealTimeWWII, which tweets the events of World War II on a daily basis from 2011 until 2017.
Celebrity tweets are often subjects of headline news and sometimes used by the mainstream media and several news outlets as a primary source for confirming information pertaining to a particular story about a celebrity.[130] CNN Breaking News, E! Online, Perez Hilton, and People Magazine are a few entertainment news outlets that have millions of Twitter followers.[131] In June 2010, 24-year-old actress Amanda Bynes shocked the entertainment industry by announcing her retirement via Twitter.
Twitter encourages this through "Twitter 101", a web-based tutorial aimed at business users.[107] For example, one of the notable business Twitter users is Dell, which reported $9m of its 2009 sales coming directly through Twitter and Facebook combined.[108] It has been argued that smaller businesses also benefit from using Twitter, since they can compete on equal terms with larger businesses within the Twitter platform.[109] In the UK, a survey indicated that 17% of small British businesses were using Twitter, mainly to attract new customers.
Using a controlled experimental design with random assignment, they found that classroom use of Twitter in specific ways such as continuing course discussions outside of class lead to significant increases in student engagement and grades for all of their courses.[15] Junco and his colleagues have also found that these benefits only apply when professors interact with students on Twitter, when they require Twitter use as part of a course, and when Twitter is integrated into the curriculum in ways that make sense for that particular course.[16] These data show the benefits of Twitter as compared to other static educational technology tools such as blogs, wikis, and learning management systems.
In May 2009, astronaut Mike Massimino used Twitter to send updates during the Hubble Space Telescope repair mission (STS-125), the first time Twitter was used by an astronaut in space.[99][100] The STS-125 mission marked another NASA/Twitter first — a post-mission tweetup held July 21, 2009, at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., attended by about 200 members of the general public.
In 2009, IndyCar Series team Vision Racing began using a Twitter account to post reports throughout race weekends.[135] That year, teams, track owners and fans started to organize tweetups.[136] By 2010, most IndyCar drivers and teams had their own Twitter account.
In August 2009, when American opponents of President Barack Obama’s health insurance reform proposals attacked the British National Health Service, thousands of NHS users took part in a Twitter campaign expressing their support for the NHS with use of the "#welovetheNHS" hashtag.
A second notable example was news organisations – including ABC News, CNN, BBC, ITV, and BSkyB – using Twitter during the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011.
The paper claimed that this case appears "to call into question privileges guaranteeing free speech established under the 1688 Bill of Rights".[58][59] The paper’s editor Alan Rusbridger credited Twitter users with taking the initiative to provide details that the press was not allowed to print, namely, that the injunction was taken out by the London solicitor Carter-Ruck on behalf of commodities trader Trafigura, who did not want public discussion of the 2006 Côte d’Ivoire toxic waste dump scandal and the resulting Minton Report (available on Wikileaks [60]).
Research reported in New Scientist in May 2008[24] found that blogs, maps, photo sites and instant messaging systems like Twitter did a better job of getting information out during emergencies than either the traditional news media or government emergency services.
One of Twitter’s mission statements is, “At Twitter, we believe that the open exchange of information can have a positive global impact.” [42] People around the world have taken this idea, using the 140-character tweet to spark an interest or gain attention for a cause or issue.

Each time you go to a person’s Twitter page and click FOLLOW your following number will increase.
Make more English friends by sharing your status updates (and blog posts) on MyEC and Twitter at the same time.
Each time you visit the site you answer the same question: "What’s happening?" (On MyEC your update question is "What’s new?") In the language of Twitter, your answer is a tweet.

Twitter is a social network that is easy to use for English learners.

Every social media user is different, so consider the amount of time you have to use Twitter versus the amount of people you follow.
Otherwise, why would I follow a friend on Twitter or have someone in my Facebook news feed if their content is double-posted to the other platform? It makes no sense.
What they don’t realize is if you follow the right people, Twitter is actually a time saver because as a user, you control the your own news feed.
If I followed all of my Facebook friends on Twitter, my list of people I follow would double.
Users of Twitter (and social media in general) have different frequencies of usage, so by tweeting your link just once means that you’re hoping all of your followers are logged in at the same time.
I think everyone can agree that Facebook is more "personal" and LinkedIn is geared more towards professionals, eh? So when it comes to Twitter – while there can be both personal and business content – there is usually so much more that is mixed in.
If I follow you because I like your take on professional hockey, I don’t want to look at my Twitter feed one day to see it taken up by play-by-play of your favorite NBA team’s game.
Then again, I actually know people who have "de-friended" me on Facebook because I unfollowed them on Twitter – I kid you not.

If someone is constantly negative, bitter, harassing, or tweets something that you find no value in, why would you follow them? Besides, if they’re "friends" of yours then you can always stay connected with them through Facebook or other platforms.
Twitter Lists are one of my favorite features, because they allow you to create curated groups of people – whether you follow them or not.
The only reason someone should have their accounts linked is if they have a ton of Facebook followers that don’t use Twitter (a great example would be someone famous – who’s typically on TV – thus carrying a healthy following).

Not only may you end up building relationships with people that can help you in your music career, but you will also draw people back to your own Twitter page – where all of your news about your new release, tour dates and more can be found.
Make sure you keep adding personal tweets in there with the tweets picked up but your feeder – otherwise people will think you ignore your Twitter page – and they’ll start ignoring you.
Your number of Twitter followers, like your number of MySpace friends, is actually a pretty poor indicator of how much you’re accomplishing, so don’t forget most of what you need to do for your music career needs to happen outside of the virtual world.
