Minecraft was the start of a new for the open world game genre for me and I have since spent the past few years looking for games that offer a similar experience.
There is also a game called Castle Miner Z on the indie section of Xbox Live Arcade Games, it’s almost just like Minecraft but you play as your avatar and can make guns, and it’s only a dollar.
I hate how if anything is remotely similar to an original game like Minecraft or Terraria, people immediately start calling it a "clone" of those games.
The main difference between Minecraft and Terraria is that Terraria is focused more on adventure as opposed to the open game world and building focused experience of Minecraft.
Minecraft might eventually get there, or open up modding to a point where the rabbit-hole becomes truly deep, but I think a Minecraft-style game that was created from the starting point of "let’s create a really foreign experience on a truly alien world, and let’s make it as deep and as replayable as possible, and let’s give our players every opportunity to make up their own stories, and endlessly speculate about the game when they’re not playing" would be able to go much farther, much faster.
Total Miner (Total Miner: Forge) is published by Greenstone Games and released in late 2011 for the Xbox Live (indie game section) and is probably one of the best experiences to Minecraft (and the closest) .
Total Miner offers little new content compared to Minecraft but it it a great Minecraft like game for the Xbox that me and some friends have spent many nights exploring.
My group of gamer friends used Manic Differ it as a fun little alternative to building on Minecraft and served its purpose well for a few months so if you have similar requirements you’ll find it a good option as your game like Minecraft.
Terraria is more of an adventure game where you kill bosses and explore dungeons while minecraft focuses on gathering stuff and building.
Manic Digger is a simple free (and open source) building game that is remniscent of Minecraft in design.
Its called Block Heroes and while it shares the building with blocks aspect of Minecraft, its really a game about creating controllable airships (and robots apparently).
Total Miner offers players many different game modes including Creative (unlimited resources and building blocks to be as creative as possible) and Dig Deep mode where players explore the many cave systems killing various monsters and hunting for hidden treasures (great for players that enjoy the adventure side of these open world adventures).
Minecraft has just to much to offer for any game to really compare don’t you think? Every place I go to says Roblox is just as good even the post here Any other game seems to almost be to scetchy and not work very well.
I was originally told about this game by a friend a few years ago and didn’t really make a connect to Minecraft at first but slowly I started to draw similarities and I always felt the game doesn’t get enough notice for what is a very unique experience.

Engine wise and building wise this game is far ahead of minecraft already, barely any surival features yet but it seems this game has alot of potential.

We still have a potential third story arc problem where tension doesn’t slowly increase throughout the game.
The result was a game with a huge spike of tension both at the start and during the final battle but there was a long, boring period in between.
If a player has made a winning move and there’s no possibility of comeback, the game should end quickly.
So, players spent most of the game fearfully turtling at home, avoiding a potentially game ending fight and avoiding interaction.
In our last game design post, I wrote that game design is not all that different than story writing.
Well I cant tell you the exact scripts but single player would be some type of generating world with stamps or maybe clones.
I’d like to make a multiplayer 2D Minecraft where you can also play singleplayer and in multiplayer, you choose who’s game to join.
To make a cloud list you need a cloud variable and some other block “magic”.
You would need clones for all of the mobs and some sort of random ai patterns for them such as a timer for when they should move.
You would need a host for the sever and some cloud lists.

What about a more traditional form of multiplayer, rather than the MMO style that is all the rage these days?  That is, there is no central server, no large persistent world with numerous players (mostly strangers).  A player simply starts a new city or loads one of their existing cities from a local save file and then sends their friends the connection info.  The friends play together for a while, building on the same city as a group (maybe with a shared budget, maybe separately somehow).  When they’re done for the day, the city is saved on the original player’s local machine just like any normal single player city.  If one friend wants to keep the city running in the background for friends to join and leave as they wish, that’s cool (maybe it can auto-pause if no one is connected).  If someone wants to publicize a server on a forum and get an ad-hoc group together, that’d be an option too.  By letting the players operate the smaller-scale servers, they get a lot more power to determine exactly how they want to play with others.
This ties in really well with a basic idea I had for projects.  To take a tangent, I’ve always been annoyed by the immediate build system of most builder games:  Spend your resources to make something, and if you mess up, spend more to destroy your first attempt and try again.  So I’m planning to have let a player design projects first, seeing how much they would cost, but not spending resources until the player finalizes the design.  I then realized that this could be extended to multiplayer with different players designing different projects.  From there, different systems could be employed for approving plans, such as designating one player the "mayor/dictator" who has sole ability to approve/deny, or having a "city council" that votes on projects.

Micromanagement skills are key in this game, and perhaps provide the tiniest degree of realism (minus the horrific violence, of course, as this is not typically depicted in strategy games) as to what it must have been like to actually "storm the beach at Normandy", considering that there were over 150,000 troops in reality, and each one had to know exactly what when and where in order for the mission to be successful.
This game, like many turn-based strategy games can feel slow for the first few turns, but things get interesting once contact is made with neighboring cultures, and the potential for trade, aid, and war arises.
Another feature unique to this game is the use of a "Politician System", where players must choose from among several politicians upon successful completion of each level, which grant various bonuses.
Developed by Stardock Entertainment, Galactic Civilizations 3 is a 4X space strategy game and the latest installment in one of the highest-rated strategy series of all time.

Seriously, feces and a feces gun were a higher priority then a colony core in a space colony building game? How’s animal feces even on an alpha development list, let alone beating a core mechanic into an alpha release? Are the devs a bunch of 12 year olds? Who would even think of, let alone want such an item?…… More clothing options? Shouldn’t that be beta level adds that come out after the core mechanics are completed? You’d think colony building would be a high priority as it’s going to be rife with bugs and issues that will be affected by every other piece of multiplayer code that’s going to be added, and as such it that would be topping the development list so that the community will have lots of time to troubleshoot it.
When server hears the playerJoinGame event, it calls the playerJoinGame function (in agxgame.js). This function places the player’s socket connection into the room specified by the player.
All of ther server-side code specific to the game is in agxgame.js. This file is pulled into the application as a Node module with var agx = require(‘./agxgame’). When a client connects to the application via Socket.IO, the initGame function of the agxgame module should run.
It then re-emits the data (the player’s name and socket ID) to the clients in the room so the Host client knows about the connected player.
The client (the Host) detects the newGameCreated event from server, displays the room id as the Game ID on screen.
The function App.Host.updateWaitingScreen will check the App.Host.isNewGame flag, see that is is true, and display the create-game-template on screen until the next player joins the game.
Each of these events carries data with it, so information from the client browser such as the player name or selected answer can travel to the server and make its way into other clients.
When a player clicks ‘Start’ after entering his or her name and the appropriate game ID, that information is collected into a single data object and emitted to the server.
The App.Host.endGame function is called on the client when the server emits the gameOver event.
When the playerJoinedRoom event is detected by the clients, a message is displayed on screen indicating that the player joined the game (See screenshot above).
In the above line of code, IO is a container object used for organizing code, the socket object is created by Socket.IO and has properties and methods related to the websocket connection, and the on function creates an event listener.
Remember, the game ID shown to the players and the Socket.IO room ID where the client connections are stored are the same thing.
