Whether you want to keep it simple as Brad, Janet, or Riff Raff or go all out as Frank-N-Furter or Columbia, we’re looking back at the film’s characters and how to make them a part of your Halloween.
Whether it’s on stage, on screen, or in movie theaters across the world, these costumes have been replicated time and time again, and there’s no wrong way to do it yourself.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show first premiered almost 40 years ago, but it still remains a cult classic to this day.
At the same auction where my husband and I purchased Frank’s dinner corset, we also purchased costumes from the original Broadway production at the Belasco: Frank’s floorshow corset, fishnet and yellow sequin gauntlet, and underwear; as well as a red sequin floorshow gauntlet I was told was Brad’s.
Frank’s jacket, as it looks today (we think) (external link): A gentleman named Mike Scott owns what is probably Frank’s original jacket, purchased at auction from the 59 Club, and he’s been kind enough to put up a website with photos of it.
This list is based on observations of several different prints of the film, discussions with other fans, and extensive use of Rocky Horror posters, books, magazines, video, DVD, Blu-Ray, stills, etc.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Columbia Adult Costume depicts Columbia, a groupie character, in the film Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The costume is very engaging with a unique look thanks to the multi color striped short shorts and a dazzling sequin jacket and shirt.
When Brad and Janet are being undressed, Columbia wears a Black dog collar with white iridescent rhinestones with 5 rhinestones on each side; small gold ring in the center.

Columbia wears a colorful outfit that includes a sequined tube top, a gold top hat and tailcoat, and a pair of rainbow-striped shorts.
Sequins are red, green, silver, blue, and gold, and are attached to a black bustier with white lining.
Columbia wears on her left hand ring finger throughout the entire film a blue ring which is a flat dark blue band (enamel?), flanked on each side with silver edging.
Columbia uses a magnificent and exotic feather boa during the Floor Show, when she is wearing her purple sequined bustier.
During Time Warp, Columbia has white highlighter all the way under her eyes, but it disappears later in the film.
Before Touch Toucha:Columbia removes her rouge, eyebrows, and her beauty mark before Toucha Toucha and in the floor show towards the end of the film she makes use of a purple pencil or lipstick and red lipstick.
Try to white out your eyebrows (foundation or a cover stick under the white may be helpful) or use wax and a latex piece from a costume shop (apply over your brows in the direction the hairs grow).
Columbia has a black beauty mark below the corner of her left eye until Toucha.

Blane arranged it with the theatre to loan her the corset from the other production for Rocky Horror.[22] Blane admits that she did not conduct research for her designing and had never seen a science fiction film, and is acutely aware that her costumes for Brad and Janet may have been generalizations.
With Pink Flamingos (1972) and Reefer Madness (1936) making money in midnight showings nationwide, an executive at 20th Century Fox, Tim Deegan, was able to talk distributors into midnight screenings,[26] starting in New York City on April Fools’ Day of 1976.[32] The cult following started shortly after the film began its midnight run at the Waverly Theater in New York City.[31] Rocky Horror was not only found in the larger cities but throughout the United States where many attendees would get in free if they arrived in costume.
However, for the film, the producers chose Pierre La Roche, who had previously been a makeup artist for Mick Jagger, to redesign the makeup for each character.[19] Production stills were taken by rock photographer Mick Rock, who has published a number of books from his work.[20] In "Rocky Horror; From Concept to Cult", designer Sue Blane discusses the Rocky Horror costumes’ influence on punk music style.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show helped shape conditions of cult film’s transition from art-house to grind-house style.[49] The film developed a cult following in 1976 at the Waverly Theatre in New York, which developed into a standardized ritual.
The film starts with the screen fading to black and over-sized, disembodied female lips appear overdubbed with a male voice,[21][25] creating the androgynous theme to be repeated as the film unfolds.[26] The opening scene and song, "Science Fiction, Double Feature" consists of the lips of Patricia Quinn (who appears in the film later as the character Magenta), but has the vocals of actor and Rocky Horror creator, Richard O’Brien (who appears as Magenta’s brother Riff Raff).
The Rocky Horror Picture Show has a global following and remains popular well into the 21st century.[56] Sub cultures such as Rocky Horror have also found a place on the internet.[57] Audience participation scripts for many cities are available to download from the World Wide Web.[21] The internet has a number of Rocky Horror fan run websites with various quizzes and information specializing in different content allowing fans to participate at a unique level.[26] New technologies are allowing for more personal access to all the things surrounding the cult.
A Super 8 version of selected scenes of the film was made available.[36] In 1983 Ode Records released "The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Audience Par-Tic-I-Pation Album", recorded at the 8th Street Playhouse.
In San Francisco, Rocky Horror moved from one location to the Strand Theatre located near the Tenderloin on Market Street.[53] The performance group there would act out and perform almost the entire film, unlike the New York cast at that time.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 musical comedy horror film directed by Jim Sharman.
The Rocky Horror Show would eventually play in the United States in Los Angeles and New York City as well as other cities.[7] Producer and Ode Records owner Lou Adler attended the London production in the winter of 1973, escorted by friend Britt Ekland.
The screenplay was written by Sharman and Richard O’Brien based on the 1973 musical stage production, The Rocky Horror Show, also written by O’Brien.

The easiest Columbia look: During the performance of "Toucha Toucha Touch Me," while hanging out with Magenta and spying on Janet and Rocky, Columbia is in vertical-striped blue and white men’s pajamas, open-toe black heeled shoes, with all her makeup is removed with the exception of lipstick, and she’s wearing Mickey Mouse ears on her head (minus the logo).
While the option of going in white briefs, socks, a watch and glasses is a pretty simple one for Brad, if you’d like more cover, you can opt for a white knee-length lab coat as seen in the lab scene where Frank reveals Rocky, or you can wear a light blue satin robe like the one thrown at Brad when he’s led to the bedroom.
Frank-N-Furter appears throughout most of Rocky Horror Picture Show wearing an all black outfit consisting of a corset, panties, a garter belt with thigh high stockings, and a pearl necklace.
What you’ll need is costume makeup, a big "pearl" necklace (large white beads will work just fine), black platform sandals, pink dish washing gloves, black fishnet stockings, a wig and a green surgeon’s gown with a red triangle on the left breast.
So other considerations include the lab coat look in the creation scene, the bedroom robe, or wearing an orange sheet in a towel-like fashion, like Janet hiding her shame when she’s discovered with Rocky by Frank, Brad and Doctor Scott.
You’ll be walking down the street, just a-having a think when you don this licensed costume which will let you bring the character of Columbia, from The Rocky Horror Picture S how ™, to life.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show started in 1975 and was a flop as a horror/sci fi musical and is generally acknowledged as a B movie.
Using the costume for a benefit concert, and all is great EXCEPT the hat!! The hat is most important for this number so now I’m going to have to figure out what to do, and spend more money, which doesn’t please me.
