In case you happen to be considering getting a gift for your child’s classroom or you happen to be putting a wish list together for your own classroom, I have put together a snapshot of what I would consider to be the top ten (store-bought) toys my own students really enjoy playing with in my classroom.
I use the word “toys” kind of loosely here because when I purchase any type of toy for my classroom, I try to be selective and think through how my purchase will promote different types of development.

The problem with the simple kits is that they don’t explore the concepts of electronics in enough detail to be truly educational whilst the advanced kits are often too far beyond the grasp of understanding that children will at best follow the assembly instructions, installing resistors and capacitors at the points indicated, without really learning anything about electrical circuits.
Following are the 5 best educational science toys which we think achieve this across the fields of chemistry, physics, astronomy, electronics and life sciences, each toy subjected to the acid test of the fickle opinions of developing and inquisitive young minds.
Our Pick for Best Educational Science Toy is Polydron Bridges of the World – A truly brilliant new set from the excellent Polydron stable of educational construction kits, the Polydron Bridges of The World kit provides all the materials and instructions needed to not only build but also test 8 different types of bridges all based on real-world landmarks.
Our Pick for Best Educational Science Toy is Orion StarBlaster 4.5 Astro Telescope – At only 25 inches tall this is small enough to be handled by young children but is equipped with some impressive optics and it looks the business as well.
Our pick for Best Educational Science Toy is Elenco Snap Circuits Green – Alternative Energy Kit – In terms of learning this is a great two-for-one.
Our Pick for Best Educational Science Toy is Galt Horrible Science Chemical Chaos – Bringing the Horrible Science brand of education hidden in child-friendly lunacy, this hits all the right notes with 10 focused projects that will not only amuse but also educate.

Fully articulated and featuring an alternate monster head with a bendy neck, NECA pulled out all the stops on this figure and gave us Evil Dead fans the Henrietta figure we’d always (for some reason) wanted.
Fans were drawn to the both the independent spirit of the venture, the interchangeability of the toys (each figure can be taken entirely apart and mixed and match with other figures via the Glyos "Fit Function" joint) and most of all, Doughty’s distinct style.
Ten years later, the secret was out – all three films had been released on special edition DVDs, Bruce Campbell had a successful memoir and there were McFarlane Toys action figures based on Army of Darkness.
Glyos jumped to another level this past year, when Doughty and several collaborators (including sculptor Jason Frailey, who also sculpted the Evil Dead II Henrietta) created the Armorvor.
I have the Evil Dead 2 Hero Ash figure… and I must say, it is quite a thing of beauty- coming complete with his boomstick, chainsaw hand, and laughing reindeer head.

Playmobil’s new ‘Future Planet’ line features astronauts living in a future space colony complete with rovers, habitats and techno-gardens for growing crops.

Toys R Us has come out with its annual "hot toy" list that includes tablets for kids, fashion dolls and even retro hits like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Furby.

Should the list prove decisive, and Hamleys has a relatively solid reputation for making accurate predictions, toy manufacturer Mattel, already the world's largest toy company, will be the big winner, making three out of the ten, with Hasbro just behind on two.
There is a decidedly retro-feel to Hamleys prediction this year, including several names and brands many of us will remember from our own childhoods, in stark contrast to the more-expected ultra-modern electronic devices.

#9 Dog Toy – Kyjen Plush Puppies Dog Squeaker Mat Toy – Kyjen seems like they’ve made some pretty popular dog toys coming into this holiday season starting off with this squeaker mat toy.
#4 Dog Toy – Kyjen Plush Puppies Squeaker Mat Long Body Dog Toy – We’ve been wanting to try one of these large Kyjen Squeaker dog toys.

Here’s what Amazon had to say: “Our realistic Skinneeez toys will bring out a dog’s natural hunting instinct while dogs chase and flip-flop these toys all over the place.
All Skinneeez are stuffing free and last longer than regular plush dog toys because there is no stuffing for dogs to rip out!” Isn’t that half the fun for your dog? I guess it’s not so fun when your dog…uhhmm…Stetson…tears up and eats the stuffing.
Last year we bought the Kyjen Invincibles Snake Dog Toy and we’ve heard that these types of dog toys are supposed to be better for destructive dogs.
#7 Dog Toy – Ethical Pet Skinneeez Exotic Series Dog Toy – I was wondering what the fuss was about these line of toys which come in the beaver, chicken, or flamingo styles.
Bill Dog Toy – Okay, okay a bit of a weak start to our top 10 dog toys list, but if you’re a Gen Xer like me then you might recall the days of Mr.
#1 Dog Toy – Drum Roll Please……… Kyjen Hide-A-Squirrel – one of our favorite toys.

Sweden’s largest toy firm, a franchisee of the U.S. brand Toys R Us, has embraced ”gender neutral” advertising in its 2012 Christmas catalog, abandoning traditional associations between certain toys and either boys or girls.
In the United States, however, Toys R Us draws a clear dividing line between boys and girls — even separating ”Boys’ Toys” and “Girls’ Toys” on its website.
“The problem with toy stores and their catalogues,” Dahmer said, “is that they’re selling a concept; an idea about boys and girls and what kind of qualities and interests they should have,” she told The Local.
“It’s about money because as long as they can fool us into believing boys and girls are fundamentally different, they can keep selling us twice as much,” Dahmer claimed.
“For several years, we have found that the gender debate has grown so strong in the Swedish market that we … have had to adjust,” said Jan Nyberg, director of sales at Top Toy, according to The Local.
Nyberg said this year’s offering was produced “in a completely different way.” His company received “training and guidance” from the advertising watchdog, a self-regulatory industry group.

Just when I thought I’d seen every sort of bike and scooter on the market, most of which are hanging in our garage, I’m introduced to the Sbyke, which puts a cool, unique spin on wheeled toys for kids.
A collaboration between Todd Oldham and Target can’t be bad, but when it turns out to be affordable craft sets for kids, I’ve got a new go-to birthday gift.
As one of the original they’re doing WHAT with LEGOS? cynics, I have come full circle, completely respecting the way that LEGO Friends sets give more girls the chance to combine building skills with imaginative play.
Whether it’s easing the challenges of having a deployed parent or even just making a nervous child feel comfortable while they’re at school, add a personal photo to the belly and this doll goes way beyond the squeezes and hugs from the regular old stuffed animals.
That’s why I’m so thankful for toys like the Moulin Roty Tool Box, which is a perfect transition between the baby sets and the real live ones.
Kids pretty much turn everything into a play house these days which is why these handmade felt card table playhouses are so brilliant.
I will say I prefer the veterinary clinic, flying club, or invention workshop to the uh, beauty salon; but hey, no one says your kids can’t play with all of them.

I didn’t originally list Playmobil because we have never owned any, but several readers commented that it is their favorite toy and my kids to play Playmobil when they go to friends’ houses.
My younger set will spend hours playing with paper, glue, paints (they love the little inexpensive watercolor sets), markers, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, and tape.
We got our Marble Run as a hand-me-down many, many years ago and the kids still love it.
Timeless, inexpensive, and hours of fun, kids love dress up clothes.
This gives the kids another option in addition to the car collections…they love to set up a few intersecting runways, airport trucks, cones, baggage movers, and airplanes.
It had a sad accident when it was left in the driveway just a couple of years ago, but gave my kids many hours of happy riding.

As the kids grow older, these toys aren’t played with quite as much, but when I mention storing them away, even the girls protest.
We wanted to pass it to the younger kids, but it was lost, so I finally bought this set for Sunshine’s ninth birthday and she loves it.
My nephews who are now 23 and 21, passed their Fisher Price Castle and Pirate Ship to my kids many years ago.
Our kids love having a toy kitchen; the one we have was passed to us by friends.
