     A Hug– The W.
These Valentine’s Day Songs are for children of all ages… and many will also appeal to grown-ups.
Whether you need songs about love, friendship or sending valentines, you’ll find a varied selection below.

Fresh off his Grammys win—and topped by an hilarious hat—Pharrell is zooming up the charts with this pleasantly calibrated offering from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, and tonight’s festivities just might have something to do with it; most of the promotional rollouts for this song have already been well under way, including a twenty four hour music video intended to spur sales.
Indeed, this song seems to be tailor-made for that intimate Valentine’s Day moment—and Perry’s camp have staggered the release of the Dark Horse video to ride out the Valentine’s Day wave.
Bone Burnett), and a fresh sense of sadness infused by the movie—in various points within the film, the song becomes a signal of great loss, whether of a partner (Llewyn’s commits suicide before the film opens) or of a whole way of life (I challenge any native New Yorker not to shed a tear as the song underscores a subway ride which takes us both downtown and back in time).
So, if your intimate Valentine’s Day moment happens to feature more lust than love this year, you won’t  find a better soundtrack than this tune.
Miley is not alone here, while her tongue is the frequent object of pithy statements like, “When Miley Cyrus is naked a licks a hammer it’s ‘art.’ When I do it, I’m ‘wasted’ and ‘have to leave home depot.’” Other celebrities are falling prey—or benefitting from—the trend: Pharrell’s hat, for instance, is quite popular, as are antics related to Taylor Swift (“be mine for like 2 weeks”) and Justin Bieber (“You’ve got my heart on lockdown”).
This song has it all for the would-be melancholic hipster: a lofty musical pedigree (it’s an anonymous classic performed over the years by Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, and Jeff Buckley), current cultural cache (featuring a ubiquitous Mumford, represented pictorially by a Punch Brother, produced by the ever-hip T.
Then come the choruses, pulling into that honest and yearning vibe Perry cultivated so well on songs like “Firework”; over a muted four-on-the-floor pulse, Perry’s strategic strain builds and builds in a tensing pre-chorus of a chorus, reaching for an almost unattainable climax until…we drop the volume back into another intimately breathy verse, ready to ride the roller-coaster back up to the top all over again.
Now, you lock eyes, hold the gaze, and wait for it to happen, whatever it is; this is Valentine’s Day after all, a time for people around the world to engage in or recreate this very moment (that, or go home bitter and alone, as we’ve all done at least once).
Here’s a sad truth behind that intimate moment: everyone in the music business is trying to sell you the soundtrack for it. Ne-Yo, for instance, just released a Valentine’s Day EP today.
Consider the verses: a paucity of rhythmic elements combined with a harmonic pad of breathy vocal samples provide the feistiness and intensity needed for that intimate moment, even before you factor in the alpha-male posturing of Juicy J (for nothing adds a hint of rough, bad-boy edge like a feature verse from a rapper).
If you’re looking for something with just the right amount of a bounce to connote under-the-covers mischief, yet clean enough to play in your bedroom (that is, if you happen to share a domicile with your parents), you’d be hard pressed to find something better than Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse”, the number one hit in the country.
These songs are for those interested not only in underscoring their intimate Valentine’s Day moment, but in the business behind the soundtracks of love.

Why it’s Better: A mostly overlooked song, "Love Lust" warps genres at will and has the driving pace that characterizes most of Mumford and Sons’ songs.
Why it’s Better: If you’re going to have sing-a-longs to sad, sappy bastard music this Valentine’s Day, this song’s vengeful poetry will get the job done.
Why it’s Better: "Will Do" is a hazy, sultry, and crescendo-driven song about starting a new relationship and all the lust that comes with it.
Why it’s Bad: The syncopated bounce of this song was best left behind in college—when you were trying to impress your friends by playing guitar on the quad.

For students with some basic reading skills, instead of matching colored heart to colored heart, make 10 colored heart cards (hearts1.pdf), and 10 word cards (hearts3.pdf), and have the students match the colored hearts to the correct color words.
For students with a little higher reading level, you can use the blank hearts worksheet (hearts2.pdf) and fill in the hearts with different Valentine’s Day vocabulary words (for example, heart, chocolate, cupid, love, card, February, friend).
・ The first student turns over one card and names the color ("It’s a blue heart"), and then turns over a second card and names the color ("It’s a pink heart.") If the two cards match, the student says, "Happy Valentine’s Day!" and keeps the cards.
